When I first adopted my ragdolls Cocoa Bean and Holly, the breeder gave all kinds of instructions on how to incorporate our new furbabies into our home.

There were instructions about feeding, keeping litter, playing, and… bonding.

She explained that kitties want to hide when scared, especially during the first few days. I recalled this happening with new kittens over the years. If there were two, they’d hide together and console each other, often somewhere out of reach of probing human arms.

But the breeder said we shouldn’t let them hide under things because then they’ll learn that under the bed or the couch is a ‘safe place.’

Instead, we should pick them up and cuddle with them so that we become their safe place. They’ll learn to trust us, love us, and come to us when they need comfort.

God and cats. Cat devotional. Cats and kittens and Jesus

And isn’t that a great picture of God?

He wants to be our safe place.

Not the sugary food we eat, the wine we drink, or the comfort of friends or relationships we seek.

Not that those are all bad things, but if we’re turning to those things (or anything else, like shopping, exercise, or.. fill in the blank) instead of to God, we’re missing out on the safest place ever.

Psalm 91:1 says, “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” NLT

So, I urge you, my friends, turn to God first.

He is your safe place.
